HELP WITH LIGHTING!!
Hey guys, so I got the lighting in my scene and it looks great but my background image Is coming out super dark. The lighting is effecting it and it's not looked right. Is there a way to not have the image plane effected by the light or do you guys know what a good solution is? I want to figure this out before I render the scene out. Thanks also here is a pic of my current lighting with the problem and my updated animation.
Some thoughts...hey guys sorry I have been MIA the past two days. I ended up pulling at 15 hours shift yesterday and I'm still on right now and have been on since 630am. I am hoping to get off at 7 but I'm not sure So anyway I had some thoughts after my crit I got from my brother in law. I want to make him more sad and just hear broken at the beginning so that way I have more to do with the thinking part to bring him to life. He seems a little dead right now and I want to play with the face more to show he has a slow realization that he "has a chance". So I'm going to work on that tonight and post it up what I have an a rendered frame for the lighting.....on that note I have been trying to get the sun and sky to work with no luck, it still always looks blow out so I'm going to go with nicks lighting model and we will go from there.
Monday
Hey everyone,
I don't remember we setup a time to meet on Monday yet right? I have somewhere to go to in the afternoon but I am not sure what time yet too. So, I want to know what time we are going to meet first in that way I can work around with my time and be able to help out with our editing.
Also did we decide which lighting we are going to use? I hope we can clear this out today before we render out our scene so that everyone is on the same page.
Thanks!

Lighting Rig for Deserted
Here is a link to download the lighting rig I'm using. Just import the file into your scene. You'll likely have to move things around a bit (Eye light for sure, and probably the Fill light too) and you may need to adjust the settings, but this should serve as a good base. Make sure to go into the light linking menu after you import and make sure the Ground Light is only linked to smooth. Also remember to use the fix for the eyelid reflections that Chris mentioned in his post.
Regardless of whether we are using this method to light or the physical sun and sky, we should post up renders of our scenes lit to make sure there are no obvious continuity errors, especially on all of your shots since they are of the same person. It would suck if someone had to re-render their entire scene just because of something as simple as that. Oh, and here's the revised background
Updated shot
Hey everyone!!
I made some changes please give me some feedback on my lip-sync, eyebrows, eye lids and everything else. I feel something still need to change for my eyebrow but I am not sure since I have been working on it for too long. Therefore, I need some fresh eyes to help me out here.
Thanks a lot!!!
I hope everyone has good process on their shots!!

Quick test
A quick test to see what it looks like with Chris' eye reflection fix and with a less saturate background. I still have to tweak the lighting to get rid of a few weird shadows though.
Kuan's shot updated
I made some changes with lip-sync. It would be good if anyone of you can give me some feedback. I am appreciated.
Thank you!!

Lighting with physical sun and sky fixed!!!!!!
Hey everyone!
So I have been messing with the physical sun and sky settings and I found out how to lower the intensity.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KteGtTP0Ka8&feature=related
He shows you at the end of the video. In a nut shell you select the direction light that was created for the sun....in the tab with the attribute editor go all the way over to the right to the mia_physicalsun1 tab...in the physical sun attributes the numbers will be highlighted in yellow. clock on the arrow inside the box bottom to the right of the multiplier box and then you can change it around. For the render I did it's set to 0.525. I also used an ambient light about 5 feet in front of his face to bring more of his face out. It was set to intensity 1. This lowers the intensity of the sun light. Also I figured out how to fix the highlight problem with the eyes.
Go to the hypershade then select the sam_with_breifcase1:eye_shader_transparency texture. Go to Specular shading and lower the reflectivity down to 0. That should fix the wired blown out eyes and reflective problem we've been having. Let me know what you guys think.

Working with lighting
So I've been working with the lighting of the desert scene here's what I've got so far. I used a warm directional light for the sun, intensity 1.00 and a cool area light scaled up to Scale X: 11.875, Scale Y: 6.838, Scale Z: 6.838, Intensity: 0.020 as the fill, representing the bounce light. Then I added a light linked light to brighten the background, and a small spotlight to brighten the eyes. I'm still working on trying to get rid of the odd highlight on the eyelids and the weird shadow under the mouth. I'll try changing the position/settings of the sun and see how that works.
Here's the background I used.

The attitude of the character as it is in my blocking is the direction we are now going. Chris is going to make his have a bit more attitude as well so do your best to match it up

On our charecter
Hey guys im trying to get a grasp on our male character to help me figure out acting choices in my shot and I would love to hear some suggestions on any actors or specifically movies old or new that have a character who is somewhat bashful, wears his heart on his sleeve, and is repetitively misguided in his quest for love.
Also are we completely clear on the new story? I know so far he loves her but she obviously doesn't. Are they two bandits who work together?, lost travelers? who what where when why?

Updated the Resources Page
Hello everyone. I updated the resources page with the files for the next project that we have up on the server. From the resources page you should be able to now download the audio clip and the scene files for the desert scene.
First rendered pass
Hey guys lets try to have a first pass render done by Tuesday so we can see how our shots are matching up with the lighting, even if you are not completely done it would be nice if everyone could have something rendered out.

Hey guys I hope you are all having a good break. I just wanted to take the chance and really thank Anthony and Nick for their work with the story and refining it! Also I really wanted to say thank you to Anthony for the lighting files and for everything he had done for our project. I personally really appreciate all the work you did with the modeling and setting up the new scenes! Thank you!
And a big thank you so the entire group for all our hard work we have done so far! Everything is looking awesome! Lets keep it up and make this next shot even better!

Files now on server
I uploaded the new desert environment and lighting file for agnes to the server. You can find them under Ulta team, project_files. The desert file image planes and lighting will be tweaked towards the end of the semester but the sand dune geometry will remain the same so we can start blocking out our shots. I included a placeholder geometry of where our two characters will stand the red cylinder is Sam (the one holding the briefcase) and the green cylinder is for Joy (the female char)
Here are a couple test shots of our environment

Desert Boards preliminary
Here are the desert boards. I'm going to make a few changes and add A-B shots where necessary, but before that I'd like to give you all a chance to weigh in. Will this work? Are there any changes that should be made?
So what are my odds?
Not good.
You mean, not good as in one in 100?
More like... One in a million....
so... you're saying I have a chance...

Agnes_lighting
I have a file with a simple basic set up of the 3 main lights I used, you will however have to tweak these to get your shot lit correctly as well as possibly add another light to get the character and bg to look good.
This is the base light set up I am using

Basically make sure you try to have the key hitting the right side of her face (warm color) and the fill (cool color) hitting mostly the left side and the rim to create a nice edge against the darkness.
In the file the fill light is the one that is going to require the most tweaking, it has a decay attached to it that will require tweaking both of the position of the light and of the intensity as well as some adjustments with the cone angle. Try to avoid this.

Here the fill is too grainy and looks bad when rendered, you will have to adjust or ad a second fill so it looks more like this

Make sure the rim light is angled towards her back, you will have to rotate the angle horizontally to create a bigger or smaller key. If you have any questions or need help let me know.

Ok so after brainstorming and discussing with Nic we both came up with a simpler idea that I think will make for an even better scene.
The setting will now be in the middle of the Sahara desert on top of some sand dunes. Trekking though the desert and finally coming to a rest for a moment we see our two characters in the middle of a confrontation. They were traveling by an Off-road vehicle but after the radiator blew out hours ago they became stranded and were forced to walk through the desert on foot. Joy (the woman character) made sure to grab her gun and Sam (male character) took his briefcase filled with important documents.
The women character Joy is holding a gun to a man who she has kidnapped. Although she doesn't really have the guts to use the gun she would never EVER let Sam (the man she kidnapped) know this. She takes herself very seriously and thinks she is someone who isn't to be messed with. Sam has information she needs and she intends to turn Sam in to the people she works for so she can collect her reward. (which is all she really cares about)
Sam on the other hand thinks she is full of crap, although he may be in danger he doesn't really take her too seriously because he thinks he will eventually get away. Sam has knowledge that he knows she needs and as long as he is the only one with the information he knows he is relatively safe. Sam doesn't really think she would actually kill him although he remains somewhat unsure because her behavior has been somewhat erratic. The last line "so your telling me there is a chance" is meant as a somewhat sarcastic remark, something sort of han soloish.
This is a preview of the setting, there will be some dunes in the foreground for the character to stand on for the scene to take place.

Here is the character with the briefcase I modeled

The male character is done as well as the briefcase the set will be ready as soon as Nic finishes the boards tomorrow

Let me know what you guys think
Ok so for our next shot instead of the post apocalyptic landscape which may be hard to cut correctly Im proposing maybe changing the setting to a a desert island, this is a quick test of what It will roughly be like. The ocean is an animated maya ocean (which can be tweaked) and the palm trees I found are animatible. For the reverse shot to this could also be an image plane of dense tropical vegetation. The lightning it a mental ray physical sun and sky. The story I think would be almost the same except instead of referring to a harsh desert landscape or ruined city he is referring to the ocean.
Let me know what you guys think of this idea or any suggestions

Kuan's Shoot updated
I spent more time in the first small section of the shoot and trying to get the lips shape with dialogue match and the eyebrows. I also made some change from everyone's commands but please let me know if that works or I still need to tone it down more.
Thank you!!
Can't make it to class today
I won't be able to make it to class today. I have a stomach upset since last night. I will upload my shoot to the blog later before 8:45am.

Blocking with Bits
I have been working the bits for fast almost almost three hours and I also keep changing postion and key frames around. So, I decided to upload it up here to get some feedback for the dialogue bits and I will add lips later.
Thanks,
Kuan

Working at 6:30
Hey everyone. After the critique Raquel suggested we meet to help get the character consistent and we agreed the best way to do this was just to work on it in the same space with each other and help each other with our shots. The mac lab opens up today at 6:30, so if anyone can work there at that time, it would be helpful.

Kuan's Blocking updated
Hi guys, here is the correction that I make and add. Please let me know what I should change for better.
I have question about the last post I had when she turned her head. I purposely cut out her nose a bit but I wasn't sure if that is a good idea. The reason I do that is because I don't want to her face/head placed at the center all the time. So please let me know what you all think.
Thanks ;)

Raquel's deadline
If you haven't checked your e-mail yet, Raquel sent out a message that basically says that we need to place our files in the andrew gordon folder by midnight tonight. That leaves about 50 minutes for us to each get a playblast up there.
Animatic boards
I revised the animatic boards a little bit on the off chance that Raquel does want to show it tomorrow. I didn't want to change anyone's work so I tried to preserve it as much as possible though for clarity and continuity issues I had to change a few (Especially Chris' since it was done in so different a style). If you approve of the changes I'll put the new boards into the animatic.
